The work I do is very thorough rather as seen on “The Repair Shop”. I treat all clocks the same no matter how humble or expensive they were originally. Working from home I can do this at a competitive rate giving great value for money.
There has become a misconception that clocks “just need a clean”that has spread more and more. Perhaps because there are less trained professionals now.
In my experience clocks almost always need a list of standard jobs. These are just if not more important as cleaning.
This is a list of jobs that are always done on every overhaul:
-A strip down and fault find
-Pivots polished and if necessary reground beforehand
-Bushing work to provide new bearings, often most holes are bushed as needed.
-Pallets reground and polished or Platform escapements stripped and cleaned like a watch (as on Carriage clocks for example), often odd jobs needed here too.
-New mainsprings are often needed and the hooking ends checked for potential breakage and always new gut lines if weight driven
-A never ending list of odd jobs!
-A thorough professional clean
-Reoil and assembly, even at this stage small things can arise and are fixed. Then a good test for at least a few weeks.
